Course Review: Country Club Johannesburg

29 Sep

Country Club Johannesburg is one of those clubs in Johannesburg that seems to fly under the radar and not attract swarms of the Johannesburg golfing fraternity. Whether this is by design or just plain unfortunate, I am not sure. What I am sure of is that it has to be one of the better clubs in Johannesburg.

Country Club Johannesburg boasts two 18 hole golf courses, the Woodmead Course and the longer Rocklands Course. I have had the pleasure of playing the Woodmead course several times. Unfortunately, a fair few of those rounds were played when the greens were being relayed. However, I am glad to say they have done an excellent job with the greens and having played golf all around Johannesburg while on holiday during the African spring, the Woodmead course at Country Club Johannesburg is by far the best course I’ve hacked up and by far in the best condition (even, in my humble opinion, better than the highly rated The Club at Steyn City course). I haven’t yet managed to get around the Rocklands course, so I can’t comment on it but I won’t be surprised if it also happens to be a little piece of golfing heaven.

The Woodmead course at Country Club Johannesburg is a lovely parkland course with some very picturesque holes. The course plays pretty open but errant tee shots will result in having to “take your medicine for a bad drive” and punching out from beneath the pine trees surrounded by pine cones and a possible tricky lie above the pine straw – you may, just for second, imagine you’re at Augusta National. A good mix of reachable Par 5s for the average drive off the tee and long Par 3s make the course a good but fair test of golfing ability. The greens, having recently been rebuilt, are in excellent condition and roll perfectly true.

My tip would be to play the course early on a Monday as it’s the day set aside for maintenance with just one of the courses open for play. As the course doesn’t get much traffic to begin with, Mondays are exceptionally quiet and you could play the front being the only person on the course, making an already stunningly beautiful course that much more enjoyable.
