Located west of Sandton and Johannesburg, the Eagle Canyon Country Club is a golf estate that is home to the Eagle Canyon Golf Links.
I have had the privilege and honor of playing a fair share of golf courses in and around Johannesburg and I can say, without any shadow of a doubt, that the Eagle Canyon Golf Links provides the most picturesque tee shot in the Greater Johannesburg area. Step on to the tee box at the Tenth and the elevated tee provides you with a panoramic view of the estate and the “Highveld” in the distance. Should you play the course in the afternoon, the combination of the elevated tee boxes on the back nine and the golden Johannesburg sunset will leave you spellbound!
Pretty views are not all this course has to offer, although not a Links course by the Golf purist definition of Links (it doesn’t get much wind, the fairways are not very undulating and the greens are not massive), the course is as close to Links golf as you will experience in Johannesburg (discounting the gorgeous Niklaus designed Serengeti Golf course).
The course is fairly open which allows you to get away with the odd wayward tee shot but there is a fair amount of water throughout the course. The fairways are exquisite but I think they’re yet to crack the formula to produce championship level greens. All golf carts feature GPS units and while zooming around the course, it is hard to believe that such a beautiful course was born out of an old quarry.
I haven’t ever used the warm area/driving range at the Eagle Canyon Golf club so can’t say much to that end but the clubhouse and locker rooms are first class. In fact, there aren’t many other golf clubs where you would have a better view enjoying a sunset drink after a round of golf.
