Glendower Golf Club, home of this years SA Open, is located east of Johannesburg in the leafy suburb of Bedfordview just a stone’s throw from the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club. It’s a pretty decent area for good golfing!!!
I have played Glendower Golf Club on a number of occasions before relocating to the UK and the one constant at Glendower Golf Club is the quality of the greens. Playing the course after 10 years, the greens are just as amazing as I remembered them to be. It’s no surprise why Glendower Golf Club is a firm favourite for the SA Open – the greens are championship level!!!
The course is a par 72, parkland course that is a pretty stern test of golf. It is a thinking course where shaping shots and finding the right parts of the fairway will be a big help. The greens are a true test and landing your ball on the wrong part of the green could easily cost you a 3-putt – you may even come across touch-putts that are uphill !!!
The course itself was in immaculate condition despite the recent lack of rain. What did strike me as particularly impressive were the caddies in our fourball – the caddies were very knowledgeable about the game and knew the course inside out.
I thoroughly enjoyed playing Glendower Golf Club and look forward to teeing it up back there on my next visit to Johannesburg.
