Course Review: The Montgomerie Maxx Royal

27 May

The Colin Montgomerie designed Montgomerie Maxx Royal is a highly rated course in Belek, Turkey. The Turkish Open was played at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal from 2013 to 2015 with golf royalty including Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia teeing it up at the course…and now me!!!

The clubhouse and check-in process was brilliant and the locker room, while small, was memorable because of the labelled lockers showing which ones were used by Tiger, Sergio, Rory and the like. The clubhouse has a beautiful view overlooking the 18th and the practice area. I thought this was one of the best places in Belek to enjoy a post-round chill.

We didn’t make much use of the range or putting green because of an impromptu thunderstorm that rolled in as we arrived. As soon as it passed, we were off at the first on the super stylish golf buggies/carts (complete with leather steering wheel). In typical Monty style, most of the holes/drives favour a fade – which was a bit of a nightmare for me as I favour a draw.

The fairways were a touch dry and had some bare patches but largely in very good condition. The greens were one of the better greens we played on in Belek barring the super impressive Lykia Links. A good mix of holes and some very fun par 5s, make this course a fun course to play. There is clear and present danger in the form of water on some holes but really doesn’t come in to play that much.

It was fun and a privilege to tee it up at the same course that Tiger and other pros played on and it’s not hard to understand why the Montgomerie Maxx Royal was chosen to host the tour event – it is a championship course in every way.

The only disappointment was that their floodlights were not working so we couldn’t play another nine holes under floodlight, but I’m sure I’ll be back in Belek at some point to get to do this. The Montgomerie Maxx Royal must be on your list of courses to play when in Belek.

Their website doesn’t have pricing and because we played the course as part of a package deal I can’t confirm costs. The buggies/carts were not included so we had to pay €35 for a buggie/cart for the round. They’re also not great on comms as they don’t really respond to tweets or web queries.
