Course Review: Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club

1 Oct

Home of the Joburg Open, the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club came about after a merger between Royal Johannesburg Golf Club and Kensington Golf Club and now boasts two 18 hole courses – creatively named the East and West courses 🙂

I have enjoyed playing both courses but will review the West course given that it is the course I have played on three occasions versus my solitary attempt at hacking up the East Course. The East course being where the final rounds of the Joburg Open are played (both courses are used on Thursday and Friday).

I can see why the the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club is chosen as the host of the Joburg Open – the local precursor to playing at The Open. From the club tees and more so from the back tees it is a course that forces you to think about the type of shot to play and how best to approach the greens. The course itself was in very good condition and given that we came across two groups of young golfers from development academies playing the course as well as local Pro – Tyrone Mordt, it is testament to the challenge that the course declares.

We shrewdly played  the West Course on a Monday when the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club is all but shut for maintenance. Either course is closed off every alternate Monday for maintenance and this is the perfect time to sneak in a round as there aren’t many other punters about. Country Club Johannesburg does a similar thing (as they have two courses as well) and our round at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club was played in the afternoon after an early tee off at Country Club Johannesburg.

The greens and fairways were in mint condition and the rough was surprisingly forgiving. I always enjoy the short Par 3, 13th hole which measures just 111 meters/121 yards from the Championship tees.

At ZAR 550.00 for a weekend round at the West Course, make sure that the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club is on your list when golfing in Johannesburg
