US Open 2015 at Chambers Bay

22 Jun

I devoted a large part of this weekend watching the US Open 2015 at Chambers Bay and a small part of me was happy to watch the Pros struggling to hole 10 feet putts and struggle around the course.

The USGA was not kind to the Pros choosing to hold the US Open 2015 at Chambers Bay. While Chambers Bay is very picturesque and it was nice to have a public course play host to the US Open, I don’t think the former quarry (Chambers Bay was a stone quarry no more than 7-8 years back) was the right sort of course to host such a huge event – it was novel idea and worth a try but I hope the USGA have learnt from this weekend that there is a fine line between making the tournament challenging (in the US Open style) and full our punishing the golfers.

The closing holes made for brilliant viewing…Jordan Spieth playing in the second last pairing went into the 16th hole at -5 holding a 2 shot lead over the field. He boxes a big putt to go into the 17th at -6 and then proceeds to double bogey the 17th bringing him back down to -4 and sharing the lead with my fellow South African, Louis Oosthuizen who is already in the club house.

Spieth then heads to the 18th which is being played as a par 5 (it can be played as a par 4 as well which wasn’t well received by the players) and finds himself putting for Eagle from about 15 feet. Two putts later, he goes in the club house leading the field at -5.

While he is playing the 18th, Dustin Johnson, who in the last pairing, found himself at one stage leading Spieth by 2 strokes now finds himself at -3 with a good birdie chance at 17. He converts the birdie putt and heads to the final hole at -4 needing an Eagle to win the tournament or a birdie to force a play-off.  He middles a monstrous drive leaving himself an iron to the green…which he then sticks to within 13 feet of the flag. Worst case for him is a play-off right??? Wrong!!! Unbelievably, he THREE PUTTS allowing 21 year old Jordan Spieth to win the US Open 2015 at Chambers Bay and also win back to back majors – You couldn’t make this stuff up !!!
