The Victoria Country Club located in Pietermaritzburg is a short 45 minute drive from the seaside city of Durban in South Africa. The Victoria Country Club plays host to a lovely 18 hole parkland course which I had the pleasure of hacking up.
The course is conveniently located on the Victoria Country Estate – which is where the South African Conosco office (the company I work for) is located – in fact, it is so convenient that the office I use when working there overlooks the 3rd green 🙂
The course is in decent condition with very well maintained fairways and greens. The greens can be a bit treacherous and very difficult to read at times (I suspect the greenkeeper’s wife had an affair with a golfer!!!). Although a compact course, the rough is not too punishing unless you hit a really bad drive. The course itself is a decent length and has a nice balance of scoring and difficult holes. The tee boxes however could use some love…
The course is laid out in a valley surrounded by mountains which makes for some scenic views on some holes. What I did enjoy most about the course was that quite a few tee shots were played from elevated tee boxes which always makes for nice viewing (and long drives – in fact, the green on the 1st hole, par 4 is in range).
