When I lived in Johannesburg, I used to play at the Wanderes Golf Club at least once every six weeks and absolutely hated the course for two reasons – the first being that I wasn’t very long off the tee, the second being that my irons weren’t very accurate.
The 18 hole course at Wanderes Golf Club is a tight, parkland course that becomes a cinch to play if you find the fairway and hit a reasonable accurate approach shot BUT finding the fairway is not enough as you need a bit of length. If you are driving sub 200-220 meters, the course can become quite tough.
The course is well maintained (like most decent courses in Johannesburg) with very good greens and fairways that are mostly green and lush all year round. The Wanderes Golf Club is by no means an easy course but it isn’t a punishing course either. The course will provide a good challenge to golfers of all abilities and as long as your swing is half decent, you will enjoy hacking up the place.
The clubhouse and locker rooms are great but the driving range/warm up area is average. I did find the members a bit stuffy and snooty and although there seems to be a healthy number of non-white members, I do think somebody needs to be remind the older white members that us darker people can and do play the game…
The back nine is the easier of the two nines with more scoring holes. There is not much opportunity to score easily on the front nine mainly due to the lack of Par 5s and Par3s (just one each on the front nine)
I couldn’t find the cost of a round on their website and as my round was covered by my bro-in-law therefore I have no idea what the cost of a round at Wanderes Golf Club would be – sorry!
